Starting therapy can be one of the most empowering and meaningful choices you make for yourself - but let’s be honest: finding the right therapist isn’t always straightforward. It’s more than just checking credentials or availability. It’s about finding someone who genuinely aligns with your specific needs, values, and goals.

This process requires patience, self-awareness, and a bit of courage. But the reward? A supportive, affirming relationship that can change how you see yourself and the world around you.

The Power of Feeling Truly Understood

You want someone who not only listens but genuinely hears you—someone who shares your feelings and fosters a safe, judgement-free space. That kind of presence truly makes a difference.

When you feel seen and heard without judgment or assumptions, it becomes easier to open up. You can explore your deeper self in a space that feels safe and genuine. And it’s within that space - free from criticism or rejection, that true healing and transformation commence.

Therapy Is Not Like Avocado Toast

Like avo toast, everyone prefers their therapy a bit differently. Feeling understood is just the beginning.

Therapy should be personalised - considering your unique personality, background, and aims. Good therapists foster collaboration, welcome feedback, and recognise you as the true expert of your own life. Which you are!

My First Session – A Turning Point

I vividly remember my first appointment with a therapist. I felt a mixture of nerves and uncertainty about what to share, along with doubts about the process. The therapist took their time, never rushing me or trying to “fix” things, and instead listened patiently with a reassuring presence. It was eye-opening to experience the incredible power of being genuinely heard. That session became a pivotal moment, not just in therapy, but in how I began to see myself.

Tips for Finding the Right Therapist

Take your time exploring your options. Here are some suggestions to help guide your search:

  •  Do your research: Visit counsellors’ websites to understand their style and philosophy.

  • Seek recommendations: Friends or trusted healthcare providers might have suggestions.

  • Try a no-obligation introductory chat: Many therapists offer free consultations or introductory sessions. This is your opportunity to interview them for the role of your therapist.

  • Trust your instincts: You will quickly get a sense of the other person and whether you believe you can rely on them to support you.

  • Keep an open mind: Be receptive to surprises.

  • Remember: You’re in control; you can pause, change therapists, or restart whenever you like. Unlike joining the Army, there is no minimum commitment.

You’re Not Alone in This

Therapy is a journey you undertake with someone, not something that’s done to you. It’s a relational process; here’s to you finding the support you need.

Take good care.
